Navigating Eclipse/ Retrograde Season

There's so much changing and going crazy this season. Losing some people while others grow older. We had an earthquake just days before the solar eclipse. For context, in my own personal life, we lost a beloved coworker suddenly, the same week my grandmother passed 2 years ago, during my sister's birthday. I'm also adjusting my life to create more space for my personal business and my personal practices, and creating boundaries with different relationships in my life. It's an uncomfortable time to manage, but here's how I've been doing it:

  • Yoga Before Bed

Yoga before bed is my personal favorite time to practice. I find while practicing in bed, I am able to decompress deeper into a relaxing point. I can fully exhale my day, and not hold onto leftover emotions into my sleep. I find that it also encourages me to be technology free in the last hour that I’m awake, which has incredible impacts on my sleep patterns. I sleep more comfortably and longer when I dedicate my time before bed to pranayama and asana practice.

  • Gym in the Morning

This year, the gym in the morning has become one of my favorite things to do for self care. I was going around 10/11am for strength training and weight gain, but in the past 3 months, I’ve found myself wanting to go earlier and earlier from 9am to 8am, and now, I found a trainer that has time at 6am! And let me tell you, the gym at 6am is M A R V E L O U S!! The hardest part has been getting out of bed in the cold morning to go to the gym, but once I’m there I feel so free. I find myself eating more and healthier and overall feeling better about myself and how I spend my days.

  • Times for Gratitude

It’s always so easy to think about everything that went wrong/ could have gone better. And it’s so much harder to take a moment and just be grateful for what we have and where we are. The more I encourage myself to just name 3 small things I’m grateful for while I’m walking, the more I simply enjoy the little things. It’s a minuscule practice that has had prolific results on my heart space in this early part of the year.

  • Calling Loved Ones

Adulting is hard enough as it is with the endless responsibilities of life, and we make it harder on ourselves by not taking time to connect with loved ones. Whether it’s as intricate as planning a trip or as small as sending a “thinking about you” text, I find my heart feeling a little lighter. I’ve been trying to make that time when I’m walking to/from work or getting ready to play some games. Find some time while preparing dinner, or for a shower, or while feeding your pets- CALL YOUR LOVED ONES AND TELL THEM YOU HEART THEM!!

  • Dedicated to Desires - Nature, Arts, New Things!

This one has been huge for me in the past year. My hobbie/practice of yoga upgraded into something I learn more about and now teach! For me I’ve been super focused on building my business and instead of finding buildings or shops to work at, I now find myself working on my to do list at a park or community garden. And this one’s been super difficult, but when I find myself about to mindlessly scroll through Instagram, I drop my phone and pick up a pencil or paint brush to do some type of art piece. The more I dedicate myself to making instead of taking, the more free I feel.

Painting with a student. The one that look like it was made by a student is mine…

My reminders to myself have been:

  1. Stand in your Power.

  2. Release your Fear.

  3. Be Courageous.

  4. Ground yourself in YOU.

Honestly, this is my first year really honing into myself and prioritizing my needs and wants. As I specify what I really want I train myself to focus on what I know leads to more than just a moment of gratification. I’m in this for the long game and it’s all about pace, it’s a marathon, not a race. And with these tips, I trust I’m winning now and in the long run. How are you getting through your own life changes?
